WHAM Observations of H-Alpha, [S II], and [N II] toward the Orion and Perseus Arms: Probing the Physical Conditions of the Warm Ionized Medium
A large portion of the Galaxy (l = 123 deg to 164 deg, b = -6 deg to -35
deg), which samples regions of the Local (Orion) spiral arm and the more
distant Perseus arm, has been mapped with the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM)
in the H-Alpha, [S II] 6716, and [N II] 6583 lines. Several trends noticed in
emission-line investigations of diffuse gas in other galaxies are confirmed in
the Milky Way and extended to much fainter emission. We find that the [S
II]/H-Alpha and [N II]/H-Alpha ratios increase as absolute H-Alpha intensities
decrease. For the more distant Perseus arm emission, the increase in these
ratios is a strong function of Galactic latitude and thus, of height above the
Galactic plane. The [S II]/[N II] ratio is relatively independent of H-Alpha
intensity. Scatter in this ratio appears to be physically significant, and maps
of it suggest regions with similar ratios are spatially correlated. The Perseus
arm [S II]/[N II] ratio is systematically lower than Local emission by 10%-20%.
With [S II]/[N II] fairly constant over a large range of H-Alpha intensities,
the increase of [S II]/H-Alpha and [N II]/H-Alpha with |z| seems to reflect an
increase in temperature. Such an interpretation allows us to estimate the
temperature and ionization conditions in our large sample of observations. We
find that WIM temperatures range from 6,000 K to 9,000 K with temperature
increasing from bright to faint H-Alpha emission (low to high [S II]/H-Alpha
and [N II]/H-Alpha) respectively. Changes in [S II]/[N II] appear to reflect
changes in the local ionization conditions (e.g. the S+/S++ ratio). We also
measure the electron scale height in the Perseus arm to be 1.0+/-0.1 kpc,

Searching for additional heating - [OII] emission in the diffuse ionized gas of NGC891, NGC4631 and NGC3079
We present spectroscopic data of ionized gas in the disk--halo regions of
three edge-on galaxies, NGC 891, NGC 4631 and NGC 3079, covering a wavelength
range from [\ion{O}{2}] 3727\AA to [\ion{S}{2}] 6716.4\AA.
The inclusion of the [\ion{O}{2}] emission provides new constraints on the
properties of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG), in particular, the origin of the
observed spatial variations in the line intensity ratios. We used three
different methods to derive electron temperatures, abundances and ionization
fractions along the slit. The increase in the [\ion{O}{2}]/H line ratio
towards the halo in all three galaxies requires an increase either in electron
temperature or in oxygen abundance. Keeping the oxygen abundance constant
yields the most reasonable results for temperature, abundances, and ionization
fractions. Since a constant oxygen abundance seems to require an increase in
temperature towards the halo, we conclude that gradients in the electron
temperature play a significant role in the observed variations in the optical
line ratios from extraplanar DIG in these three spiral galaxies.Comment: 43 pages, 29 figure
Ecological and physical characteristics of the Te Awa O Katapaki Stream, Flagstaff, Waikato
1. The fish, macroinvertebrates, aquatic vegetation, and water quality indicate that the Te Awa O Katapaki Stream is an unpolluted, pastureland stream that is typical of the Waikato region.
2. The stream has very high nutrient concentrations that probably result from the dairy farming upstream.
3. The fish fauna is dominated by the native shortfinned eels. The presence of the migratory common smelt indicates that swimming fish species also have free access to the stream from the Waikato River.
4. Fish of high conservation value, such as giant or banded kokopu (Galaxias argenteus or G. fasciatus) were absent, which is predictable given the warm, unshaded nature of the stream.
5. Fish and invertebrates would soon recolonise the restored stream following any work in the streambed
Nano-scale analysis of titanium dioxide fingerprint-development powders
Titanium dioxide based powders are regularly used in the development of latent fingerprints on dark surfaces. For analysis of prints on adhesive tapes, the titanium dioxide is suspended in a surfactant and used in the form of a small particle reagent (SPR). Analysis of commercially available products shows varying levels of effectiveness of print development, with some powders adhering to the background as well as the print. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of prints developed with different powders show a range of levels of aggregation of particles.
Analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the fingerprint powder shows TiO2 particles with a surrounding coating, tens of nanometres thick, consisting of Al and Si rich material. X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to determine the composition and chemical state of the surface of the powders; with a penetration depth of approximately 10nm, this technique demonstrates differing Ti: Al: Si ratios and oxidation states between the surfaces of different powders. Levels of titanium detected with this technique demonstrate variation in the integrity of the surface coating. The thickness, integrity and composition of the Al/Si-based coating is related to the level of aggregation of TiO2 particles and efficacy of print development
A three-dimensional simulation of transition and early turbulence in a time-developing mixing layer
The physics of the transition and early turbulence regimes in the time developing mixing layer was investigated. The sensitivity of the mixing layer to the disturbance field of the initial condition is considered. The growth of the momentum thickness, the mean velocity profile, the turbulence kinetic energy, the Reynolds stresses, the anisotropy tensor, and particle track pictures of computations are all examined in an effort to better understand the physics of these regimes. The amplitude, spectrum shape, and random phases of the initial disturbance field were varied. A scheme of generating discrete orthogonal function expansions on some nonuniform grids was developed. All cases address the early or near field of the mixing layer. The most significant result shows that the secondary instability of the mixing layer is produced by spanwise variations in the straining field of the primary vortex structures

Tildrakizumab in the treatment of psoriasis: latest evidence and place in therapy.
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that is clinically characterized by scaly cutaneous plaques. New evidence suggests that dysregulation of interleukin (IL)-23, a key cytokine in the T-helper-17 pathway, plays a vital role in the development of psoriatic systemic inflammation. The novel biologic medication tildrakizumab is among the first drugs with specific action against IL-23 that has recently been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency for moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Tildrakizumab has been shown in large randomized controlled trials to be effective in improving skin manifestations as well as enhancing quality of life outcomes in patients with psoriasis. Its simple dosing, prolonged duration of action, and mild adverse event profile make it a practical option for patients; however, only a small number of trials have investigated the clinical effectiveness of tildrakizumab, and long-term data regarding the drug's efficacy and safety are currently limited. Hence, further research is needed to better understand the risks and benefits of tildrakizumab. This review summarizes and analyzes phase I, phase II, and phase III clinical trials that investigate the mechanism, pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety of tildrakizumab. It also identifies areas in which additional studies are warranted to further elucidate the advantages of tildrakizumab over other biologic therapies

Electron tunnel sensor technology
Researchers designed and constructed a novel electron tunnel sensor which takes advantage of the mechanical properties of micro-machined silicon. For the first time, electrostatic forces are used to control the tunnel electrode separation, thereby avoiding the thermal drift and noise problems associated with piezoelectric actuators. The entire structure is composed of micro-machined silicon single crystals, including a folded cantilever spring and a tip.
